How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photography Session in Rochester, NY

Newborn

Everything you need to know about preparing for your studio, in-home, or outdoor newborn photography session experience.

Welcoming a new baby into your family is one of life’s most beautiful transitions. It is also a season filled with sleepless nights, endless snuggles, and learning to navigate a whole new rhythm together, whether it is your first baby or your fourth.

As a Rochester, NY newborn photographer and a mama to two little boys myself, I know firsthand just how quickly those early days pass. The tiny fingers, the sleepy expressions, the way your baby fits so perfectly in your arms. In a blink of an eye, your tiny newborn changes before we even realize it. And while newborn photographs are something you’ll treasure for a lifetime, preparing for your session shouldn’t feel like another thing on your already-full to-do list.

Whether you choose to have your newborn photography session in my natural-light studio in Farmington, New York, in the comfort of your own home, or outdoors surrounded by nature, here are a few tips to help you prepare for a beautiful, relaxed newborn photography experience.

1. Choosing your Newborn Photography Session Experience

Every family is different, and I love offering several ways to document this special chapter for you.

In-Home Newborn Sessions

There’s something incredibly meaningful about photographing your baby in the place where their story begins. In-home newborn photography sessions take a lifestyle approach, focusing on the natural connections between you and your newest little love. Whether you’re snuggled together on the couch, rocking your baby in the nursery, or watching your older children meet their new sibling, these sessions celebrate your family exactly as you are.

Studio Newborn Sessions

My studio offers the best of both worlds: timeless, naturally posed and lifestyle family portraits and beautiful individual portraits of your newborn. For babies within their first two weeks of life, I also offer natural, gently posed newborn portraits on a beanbag, depending on your baby’s comfort and readiness. These early days are often ideal for capturing those sleepy, curled-up poses.

Outdoor Newborn Sessions

For families who love the outdoors, an outdoor newborn session in the warmer months offer an opportunity to capture your growing family surrounded by nature. These sessions are lifestyle-focused mixed with gentle posing guidance, with an emphasis on genuine interactions, beautiful light, and the connections that make your family unique. Because newborns are especially sensitive to temperature and weather, we will carefully consider the season and conditions when planning your newborn photography session.

2. When Should You Schedule Your Newborn Session?

I recommend reaching out during your second trimester to reserve your newborn photography session. I book a limited number of sessions each month so I can give every family the time, care, and personal attention they deserve.

If you’re dreaming of those sleepy, gently posed newborn portraits in the studio, the first two weeks after birth are generally the ideal window.

However, if you prefer a more lifestyle-focused session, there’s no need to feel rushed. Beautiful newborn photographs can be captured beyond those first two weeks, with an emphasis on your baby’s expressions and the natural connections within your family.

Your baby’s comfort and safety will always come first.

3. What Should You Wear for Your Newborn Photography Session?

“What should we wear?” is one of the questions I hear most often. I recommend soft, neutral tones, gentle textures, and comfortable pieces that feel timeless. Think coordinating colors and textures that complement one another, without everyone needing to match perfectly.

You’ll have plenty of guidance along the way. I’ll send you a newborn planning guide, and we’ll schedule a planning call to talk through wardrobe choices and the details of your session. You’re also welcome to borrow from my thoughtfully curated client wardrobe, which includes beautiful pieces for mothers to help take the stress out of choosing what to wear.

My Signature Newborn Sessions also include professional hair and makeup in the comfort of your own home, so you can enjoy a little pampering while feeding or snuggling your baby before your session.

You’ve just brought a new life into the world. You deserve to feel cared for, and to feel beautiful in these photographs, too.

4. Preparing Your Baby for the Session

Here’s my biggest piece of advice: don’t stress about whether your baby will cooperate. Newborns have their own schedules, and that’s completely okay. We have plenty of time to feed your baby whenever they’re hungry, bring along anything that helps keep them comfortable, and know that we’ll take breaks as needed for feeding, changing, or soothing. There’s no expectation for your baby to sleep the entire session. Some of my favorite photographs are of newborns wide awake, looking up at their parents with those beautiful little eyes.

5. Preparing Your Home for an In-Home Session

If you’ve chosen an in-home newborn photography session, please don’t feel like you need to have a perfectly styled house or that it needs to look like it’s in Architectural Digest. The most important aspect I look for is which rooms have the most abundant and beautiful natural light. These areas are typically your bedroom, living room, or nursery. A little tidying in the spaces we’ll photograph is more than enough. What makes in-home sessions meaningful isn’t having a picture-perfect home. It’s documenting the place where your family’s memories are being made.

6. What About Older Siblings?

As a mama to two little boys myself, I know that asking a toddler to sit perfectly still and smile for the camera isn’t always realistic. And that’s okay. In fact, I don’t expect them to.

I’m no stranger to a little chaos. I bring patience and understanding to every session, creating a welcoming space where your children can be themselves and you can feel at ease, without any judgment. I love giving children the freedom to play, be silly, cuddle their new sibling and show me their personalities. I want to document who they are in this season, the little expressions, the laughter, and the personalities you know and love.

The mischievous smiles, the tender hugs, the curiosity of becoming a big brother or sister. These little moments are just as important as the photographs of your newest addition. I want you to know that your newborn photography session is also about capturing your older children as they are today, and the moments you share as your family grows.

7. Most Importantly, Be Present

If there’s one thing I want you to remember before your newborn photography session, it’s this: you don’t need to have everything perfectly together. You don’t need to worry about your baby crying, your toddler having a moment, or whether everyone will cooperate. I’m here to create an experience where you feel comfortable enough to slow down, be present, and enjoy this fleeting chapter of your family’s story.

Years from now, when those tiny fingers are no longer so tiny and the little arms that once reached for you have grown, I hope these photographs will bring you right back to how it all felt, and how deeply you loved one another.

That’s why I transform your photographs into heirloom artwork, from albums you can share with your children and grandchildren one day, to framed portraits that become part of your home. I want you to experience these memories when you turn a page or walk past a favorite photograph, and for your children to grow up seeing the love that has always surrounded them. These are pieces to enjoy today and one day place in their hands.

If you’re expecting a little one and looking for a Rochester, NY newborn photographer, I’d love to help you document this beautiful season of your life.
